Report on 3rd Atlantic Stakeholder Platform Conference in Dublin on September 27, 2016

The October issue focuses on “innovation and entrepreneurship” achieved through the organisation of the 3rd Atlantic Stakeholder Platform Conference, our networking activities and our participation in events throughout the Atlantic Area. Focus of the third edition of our Newsletter is the Atlantic Project Awards Ceremony, presented by Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Mr. Karmenu Vella. The 1st Atlantic Project Awards ceremony was held during the 3rd Atlantic Stakeholder Platform Conference in Dublin on September 27, 2016. The Atlantic Project Awards, presented by the Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Mr. Karmenu Vella, are designed to honour outstanding success stories, achieved by projects in the geographical area covered by the Atlantic Strategy and that were related to the implementation of the Atlantic Action Plan.

The 5 winners per category are: AORA-CSA in International Cooperation; ARCOPOL PLATFORM in Atlantic Marine and Coastal Environment; ATLANTIC BLUE TECH in Innovation & Entrepreneurship; ATLANTIC POWER CLUSTER in Sustainability and BATTERIE in Accessibility and Connectivity.”

The 3rd Atlantic Stakeholder Platform conference was held in Dublin on September 27, 2016 and focused on topics related to Priority 1 of the AAP “Promote entrepreneurship and innovation” emphasizing on project development so as to promote activities linked with Atlantic Best Practices and the Atlantic Project Awards.  The Conference was attended by 276s registered participants and included over 40 confirmed exhibitors from the five Atlantic EU Member States that demonstrated their activities; while a special Cooperation Area, accessible during the whole duration of the Conference, hosted Networking and Matchmaking activities, enabling participants to identify suitable cooperation opportunities.  This uniquely interactive Conference, in the presence of the Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Mr. Karmenu Vella, brought together stakeholders of the Atlantic Strategy and allowed them to meet, greet and identify suitable cooperation opportunities, exchange ideas and secure funding for their projects.  More information and outcomes of the event can be found here.

A l’issue d’une procédure d’appel d’offres, les 4 prestataires suivants ont été choisis:

–          Récupération du contenu de l’ancien site internet d’Ancorim et création d’un nouveau site : Société GIRT

–          Mise à jour et extension de la base de données des acteurs : Martin Montewy

–          Animation du réseau : CoastInfo

–          Aide à la gestion comptable : Iris Pasman

Un proyecto europeo aspira a retirar 100 toneladas de residuos del litoral vasco

Si se cumplen los objetivos marcados, en tres años se habrán 100 menos de basuras marinas en el Golfo de Bizkaia, Guipuzkoa y Lapurdi. Es la meta que se han planteado los impulsores del proyecto Life Lema, iniciativa de recogida y gestión inteligente de basuras marinas para autoridades locales está dotada con una inversión de 1,2 millones de euros, procedente de la Unión Europea.

El proyecto Life Lema, liderado por la Diputación Foral de Gipuzkoa y bajo la coordinación técnica de AZTI, cuenta con la participación de Lyonnaise des Eaux, Ville de Biarritz, Syndicat mixte Kosta Garbia y Surfrider Foundation Europe. El proyecto creará “un servicio inteligente para la recogida y gestión de las basuras marinas flotantes”, explica Azti, que busca orientar a las autoridades locales en la adopción de un enfoque sostenible para mantener la costa limpia y reducir los impactos negativos generados en el medio ambiente y para la sociedad.

En las tareas de recogida de residuos participarán dos barcos pesqueros y tres buques de limpieza para la recogida en el mar, una actividad que creará al menos tres puestos de trabajo. Entra las acciones que se desarrollarán está prevista la colocación de una barrera flotante para la acumulación de basuras marinas en la desembocadura del río Deba y la instalación de dos videocámaras en la desembocadura del Adour y el Oria para monitorizar las arribadas de basura. El inicio de las tareas tendrá lugar el próximo 1 de septiembre y se desarrollarán hasta el 1 de septiembre de 2019.

El proyecto promoverá soluciones a las autoridades locales con el fin de responder a la Directiva Marco 2008/56/CE de la Estrategia Marina Europea que tiene por objeto alcanzar el buen estado medioambiental de todas las aguas marinas antes de que finalice el año 2020.

State of Play on Organisation of 3rd Atlantic Stakeholder Platform Conference

Due to the increased interest expressed for the submission of workshop proposals for the 3rd Atlantic Stakeholder Platform Conference (Dublin, Ireland – 27 September 2016) it has been decided to grant a small extension to the deadline for submission until the 30th of June.

Submit your workshop proposals by filling the online form on our website. Travel expenses and accommodation for up to two (2) organisers per selected workshop will be fully covered by the Support Team for the Atlantic Action Plan.

Promote your Atlantic Project by submitting it for the Atlantic Project Awards by the 15th of July 2016. Similarly, travel expenses and accommodation for attending the Atlantic Awards ceremony (Dublin, Ireland – 27 September 2016) will be fully covered for the winner of each of the five categories by the Support Team for the Atlantic Action Plan.

6th conference on Maritime Spatial Planning Worldwide (MSP)

Please be advised of the rescheduled dates for the sixth conference of the MSP stakeholder series, focusing on MSP Worldwide. Due to various reasons, the conference had to be slightly postponed. The conference is now confirmed to be held on 23 – 24 June 2016 at the University of the Azores, Ponte Delgada, Azores.

The conference will present experiences, opportunities and challenges of MSP implementation around the world. In particular it will look at how MSP can advance Blue Growth world-wide, its potential to promote climate change solutions, as well as at the role of area-based management regimes in international waters. The main purpose is to take stock of what is being done at international level and identify potential synergies as well as possible contributions from European MSP processes.

The summer school will be held from 6th to 9th June 2016 (coinciding with the week of the Oceans’ Day on 8th June), at Aquarium of San Sebastian (Spain), European Capital of the Culture in 2016. This is the 13th AZTI’s Summer School and the 4th DEVOTES Summer School.

The topic for this summer school relates to marine ecosystem services and thelinks between their assessment, mapping and the need for a socio-ecological framework to address the important management issues related to the governance of the oceans. Governing the oceans and keeping them in a healthy state requires activities at sea to be sustainable, so that the ecosystem services provided by the oceans and the functionality of the ecosystems can be maintained.

In close partnership with the relevant EUCC national branches, with the other EUCC offices and with local groups and stakeholders, EUCC-Atlantic Centre’s main objective is to take part in the work carried out on the Atlantic coasts for Integrated Coastal Management and Land-Sea Interactions within the European Maritime Spatial Planning policy.

The aim of this blog is to inform you about the initiatives and projects concerning the European Atlantic coasts and marine regions.
